One of the most common and unfortunate plumbing problems homeowners can encounter is a toilet that will not flush. Not only is this incredibly troublesome, but it can also become a sanitation issue. Unfortunately, most homeowners take the toilets around their homes for granted until they come face to face with issues like this. Luckily, our plumbing professionals at Beavercreek Plumbing & Drain provide some knowledge on what could be occurring with your toilet that won’t flush and how to repair it.

Is Your Toilet Stopped-Up?

When you flush your toilet, and the only thing that happens is more water enters the bowl, you may have a stopped-up or clogged toilet. A clogged toilet is one of the most common plumbing issues for homeowners. It typically happens if someone in the household uses too much toilet paper or flushes items that are not flushable, such as feminine hygiene products and paper towels. Unfortunately, this issue is inevitable but is an easy fix! If your toilet is clogged, you can either remove the items if it is a surface-level clog or use a plunger if they have already been flushed and are stuck.

Are Your Toilet’s Water Levels Lower than Usual?

For your toilet to completely flush, it needs a lot of water, almost 80% of the toilet’s water capacity, to be exact. However, if the water volume is low in your toilet, the bowl won’t receive enough water to flush successfully. Inside the tank of your toilet, typically, manufacturers mark a line on the inside of the tank right above the overflow tube to display how much water should be in your toilet’s tank. If you find that the water in your toilet’s tank is lower than it should be, you’ll need to adjust your float. A float ball is a large rubber ball device used to float upwards as the water in the tank rises to close off water flow into the tank when enough water has entered. Adjusting the float ball will allow more water to flow through your toilet’s tank to have a successful flush.

Have You Checked The Condition Of Your Toilet’s Flapper?

Is your toilet running more often than it should? Your toilet may have a warped flapper. A toilet’s flapper is a small rubber seal connected to the lift chain that covers the hole in your toilet’s tank. When you press the handle on your toilet, the lift chain raises the flapper and allows water to enter the toilet’s bowl. When the toilet handle isn’t being used for flushing, the flapper’s role is to ensure the hole from the tank to the bowl is sealed off. However, if the flapper is warped, damaged, or too old, it may not be succeeding in its role. We suggest checking the lift chain to ensure there isn’t too much slack. The lift chain’s length should be an inch and a half long, so if it is longer, just trim it to the correct size. If the chain is in good condition, but your toilet’s flapper is not, it may be time to call your local plumbing contractor to repair the issue.
